DHI hair transplant in Albania
A DHI hair transplant in Albania uses the same extraction as any follicular unit extraction and changes only the last step: instead of opening channels first and filling them afterwards, the graft sits inside a hollow needle and is pushed into the scalp as the needle goes in. One movement, one graft. At Ego Hair Clinic a DHI session costs €2,500 as a package, and it is chosen for a zone, not for a whole head, because the same pen that gives a front hairline its angle also slows the surgery down.

Send three photos, one straight at the front, one down on the crown and one of the back of your head, through the free hair analysis. You get back a graft number, whether the surgeon who will treat you would use the pen or channels in each zone, and the price.
What the implanter pen changes, and what it does not
Nothing about the donor area changes. The punch still lifts the follicular unit out of the safe zone at the back and sides, the grafts are still counted and sorted by the number of hairs they carry, and the donor still heals as small round dots.
The change begins at the front of the head. In channel work the surgeon opens every incision first, judging depth, angle and direction across the whole zone, and the team then places grafts into those waiting slots. With the pen there are no waiting slots. The graft is loaded tail first into the needle, the needle enters at the angle the surgeon holds it at, and a plunger releases the graft at the depth the needle reached. The incision and the placement are the same event.
Two things follow from that. The graft is never held in forceps at the moment of placement, so it is handled less. And the angle you see in the mirror at month twelve is decided one graft at a time rather than across a whole opened field.
Where DHI earns its extra hours
The pen is slower. That is the whole trade, and it is worth paying in the zones where a single degree of angle is visible from two metres away.
The front hairline. Single-hair grafts at the very front need to leave the skin almost flat, pointing forward, in an irregular line. The pen sets each one on its own.
Small dense areas. Temples, a scar edge, a thin patch inside otherwise healthy hair. No open channels means no bleeding field to work in and less trauma to the hair already growing there.
Cases where the head is not shaved. Because there is no open channel waiting to be found, the pen can be threaded between existing hairs. That is why the technique is the one used for an unshaven hair transplant and for most women’s cases.
Second passes for density. Adding to a zone that already has transplanted hair in it, where every channel would risk an existing graft.
What it costs you in grafts and in hours
A DHI day is a shorter day in graft terms. Loading a needle, placing, reloading and returning takes longer than dropping a graft into an open incision, and the grafts spend longer out of the body if the session is pushed too large. That is the honest reason a pen session is planned smaller than a channel session, and the reason a Norwood 5 with a wide crown is usually not a whole-head DHI case.
It is also why the technique is priced as a package here rather than per graft. The arithmetic behind that sits on the hair transplant cost page.
How the two methods are split inside one surgery
Most of the surgeries here are not purely one technique. The zones get what they need.
| Zone | Usually implanted with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Front hairline, first two rows | Pen | One angle per graft, single hairs, irregular line |
| Temple points | Pen | Very flat angles, fine hair |
| Mid-scalp | Channels | Large area, dense packing, hours matter |
| Crown and whorl | Channels | The spiral direction is set across the field, not graft by graft |
| Inside existing hair | Pen | Nothing already growing has to be cut around |

The honest limits
DHI is a placement method. It does not add hair to your donor area, it does not make thin hair thick, and it does not change the timeline: the transplanted hairs shed between weeks two and six, growth starts in month three or four, density is readable at month six and the result settles between month twelve and month eighteen. The transplanted hair is permanent; hair that was not transplanted can still thin, which is why medication is discussed separately and with your own doctor.
It is also not a cure for a badly designed hairline. A pen placing grafts in a straight line across the forehead produces a straight line. The design decision is made before any needle is loaded, and that is the subject of the hairline restoration page.
Your visit
| Day | What happens |
|---|---|
| Day 0 | Land at Tirana airport, 25 minutes to the clinic or the hotel, blood tests, photographs, the hairline drawn on you and agreed in a mirror |
| Day 1 | Surgery. Donor shaved and anaesthetised, extraction through the morning, a meal, then implantation with the pen through the afternoon |
| Day 2 | Swelling check, the first wash done for you and then taught to you, medication explained, donor dressing reviewed |
| Day 3 | Fly home with a hat you can put on without touching the grafts |
| Week 2 to 6 | The transplanted hairs shed; photos to +355 69 691 1118 if anything worries you |
| Month 12 | The last scheduled photo check-in |
FAQ
Is DHI better than FUE?
They are the same operation until the last hour. DHI is the better answer for a front hairline, for temples, for work threaded between existing hairs and for cases where the head stays unshaven. Channel work is the better answer when a large area needs to be covered in one day, because it places more grafts per hour without the grafts waiting longer outside the body. A surgeon who offers only one of the two has to make your case fit the method, which is the wrong way round.
How many grafts can a DHI session cover?
Fewer than a channel session of the same length. The largest single-day sessions here run to 4,500 grafts across techniques, and a pure pen session is planned below it. If your photo analysis comes back with a number that would need two days of pen work, the surgeon who will treat you will either split the zones between the pen and channels or plan a second session a year later rather than stretch one day.
Does DHI mean I can keep my hair long?
Sometimes. The pen is what makes an unshaven case possible, but the donor area still has to be reachable, and most unshaven plans involve shaving a band at the back that your own hair covers. Smaller sessions are far easier to do this way than a full Norwood 4 rebuild. The analysis will tell you honestly whether your graft number and your hair length can both be had.
Does hair grow faster after DHI?
No. Nothing about the implantation method moves the biology. Shedding in weeks two to six, first growth in month three or four, readable density at month six, the settled result at month twelve to eighteen. Clinics that advertise faster growth after a particular pen are selling the pen.
Is the pen less uncomfortable than channels?
The part that stings is the anaesthetic injection, in both methods, for a few minutes at the start of each stage. After that you feel pressure and hear the work rather than feel it. The donor area is the sore part for two or three days afterwards, whichever way the grafts went in. A full account of what the day feels like is on the pain and anaesthesia page.
Use the hair analysis form on this site to send your three photos and your age, how long you have been losing hair and whether you have had surgery before. The surgeon who will treat you looks at the photos personally and answers with a graft number, a technique per zone and a fixed package price. Start at the free hair analysis.
