Tirana airport (TIA) to the clinic

TIA is a single-terminal airport, so arrivals is one hall and there is nowhere to get lost. A driver waits with your name on a card and takes you straight to the clinic or to your hotel, depending on what time you land and whether your consultation is the same day. Baggage reclaim to the car is usually a few minutes.

The drive is one road into the city. Off-peak it takes about 25 minutes. In the morning and late-afternoon peaks it can take longer, which matters only on the morning of surgery, and on that morning the driver builds the traffic into the collection time rather than leaving it to you.

Flight times into TIA, for planning: Milan, Rome, Bari and Bologna are about an hour and a half; Barcelona about two and a half hours; London, Manchester and Madrid about three hours; Dublin about three and a half. Most patients land in the afternoon, have the consultation and blood tests the same evening or the next morning, and are in surgery on day one. The whole sequence is set out on your trip to Tirana.

Hotel to clinic on the morning of surgery

Surgery starts early because a 3,000-graft procedure takes six to eight hours in the chair. You are collected from the hotel, so there is no taxi to find and no address to explain in a language you do not speak. The same driver takes you back in the evening.

The hotel used for patients is a short trip from the clinic, and for anyone who prefers to walk it on the day before, the route is flat.

Taxis in Tirana are easy to find and ride-hailing apps work in the city. Reception will write the address in Albanian on a card for you, which saves an argument at the kerb.

Arriving from Durrës, the coast, or the ferry from Bari

Plenty of patients combine the surgery with time on the Albanian coast, and some arrive by sea rather than by air. The ferry from Bari docks at Durrës, and Durrës to Tirana is a straightforward drive on a main road. If you are coming that way, tell the clinic the sailing you are on and the arrival is handled the same way as a flight.

If you are already on holiday further south, in Vlorë or Sarandë, the drive north is longer and the sensible plan is to come to Tirana for the surgery days and go back afterwards rather than commute. The timing of that is covered on the holiday page.

Parking, landmarks and finding the door

Tirana street numbering is not always obvious, so the clinic gives patients a pin and a landmark rather than a number to hunt for.

Hours, and when to come in

Reception hours are Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 18:00. Consultations for people already in Tirana can usually be arranged within a few days. Albania runs on Central European Time, so the clinic’s clock is the same as Milan and Madrid, and one hour ahead of London and Dublin. Euro is accepted in the city alongside the lek.

Is the airport transfer included in the price?

Nothing about the transfer is billed on the day. If your travel is unusual, for example an arrival by ferry or a night landing, say so when you book so the driver is scheduled for the right time and place rather than the default.

What happens if my flight lands late at night?

Send the flight number when you book and the driver is scheduled against the actual landing time, not the timetable. Delays are normal and are not a problem: the collection moves with the flight. What matters is that the clinic has a number that will reach you when you land, so add the phone you will actually switch on in Albania to your form, with the country code.

Can I drive myself, and is there parking?

Patients living in Albania often drive. You should not drive yourself home on the evening of surgery, though: your scalp is anaesthetised, your donor area is dressed, and you have been sitting for most of the day. Bring someone, or let the clinic arrange the car.

How far is the clinic from the city centre?

Tirana is a small capital and crossing it is a matter of minutes rather than an expedition, which is one of the practical arguments for having surgery here rather than in a city where the clinic and the hotel are an hour apart.
